What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal emotion, we all experience it from time to time but when it starts to become a feature of our lives something needs to be done. Excessive anxiety and frequent worry is a serious problem. People can find themselves completely overcome with worry and fly from one deep concern to another without respite building up to a situation where they are completely unable to see a way forward and are powerless to find a why out. Triggers for anxiety can come from normal every day situations like work, finances or relationships but they can also become compulsive and take the form of repetition and insubstantial anxieties like have I left the Iron on or check that you have locked the doors repeatedly before you go to bed. These conditions can magnify themselves to such an extent as to close your life down almost completely and stop you having any kind of freedom of life at all.

What is stress?

Stress is another normal part of life. It is related to our natural inbuilt defence system that allows us and most other animals to prepare for “Fight or Flight” when we a presented with a danger our situation. However, the triggers can also be brought on by none dangerous situations. This is where it can become a problem. Our self preservation reactions start to prepare us for the perceived danger and our heartbeat increases, our blood pressure increases, the output of adrenaline and other hormones increases, as does the increase in energy producing sugar in our blood stream. All this is complimented by a heightened awareness senses. This can have a startling effect on us with unpredictable results the least of which is loosing our cool and loosing the ability to be logical and constructive. Eventually it can prove to be most debilitating and can cause a breakdown if not checked. More work days are lost through stress than any other illness. Stress is recognises as modern day epidemic, but help is at hand.
